Welcome to LightCrafter Photography

Photography began as an interest, developed into a hobby, and eventually became a passion (my family would charitably call it an obsession). Over the years my interest in landscape photography has lead me to many wonderful areas, and I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to see these places. There are few things that can continue to inspire a feeling of awe like the world around us. As we become more and more removed from the physical world in our day-to-day lives, we forget to look around, and can forget how to "see". For myself photography is a tool to help me to learn to "see" again. So, this site is not a site to celebrate the photographer or the equipment or one's travels. It is a site to celebrate the world around us, to remind us to look, and to see the beauty.

The photos were taken with a variety of cameras over the years, changing with the times. They begin with 35mm SLR's, and later Medium Format cameras, and finally Digital SLR's (beginning in 2000). The 35mm and digital cameras were and are Canon with a few rare exceptions. Medium Format cameras were Bronica and Contax. Over the last few years the cameras have been Canon Digital SLR's including the D30, D60, Rebel, and 1Ds, and 1Ds MkII. Current equipment includes the Canon 1Ds Mark II and Canon Digital Rebel cameras. Canon lens include the 16-35mm 2.8L II USM, 24-105mm f4 L, 100mm 2.8 Macro, 70-200mm f4 L IS USM, and the 300mm f4 L USM. I use a Gitzo G 1128 MK2 tripod and an Acratech Ballhead for hiking. Flash units include the Canon 580EX, 420EX, and the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX. I use a variety of Compact Flash Cards and MicroDrives, from 512 MB to 8 GB. Filters include Circular Polarizing, UV, and Graduated Neutral Density Filters primarily, and occasionally others. I find that as time goes on I use less and less of other speciality filters. Image processing is done on a Mac G5 Computer with Adobe Photoshop CS 2. The web site was prepared with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX. I am currently printing on an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Printer (archival paper and inks) for my own printing. Prints for sell are printed by a commercial lab (larger sizes) or on the R1800 (13 X 19" and smaller). Virtually all of the images were taken with available light. Many have been colored balanced or cropped in Photoshop, but are otherwise unchanged. If there is interest in purchasing a photograph contact me by email.

So welcome and enjoy. Learning to make the web site has been fun and a challenging. This is a work in progress so comments are welcome. If there are questions or comments I can be contacted at jwp@light-crafter.com. I would enjoy hearing from you. Please let me know of errors or broken links!

Technical notes: Since this site is image heavy, it is best navigated with a high-speed modem, and viewed at a screen resolution of at least 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768. For those with slower modems, I apologize. There is always a compromise between speed and quality, images to small to appreciate or to long to arrive. Let me know if you encounter any problems.

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
--Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad (1869)

"Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quiestest chambers."
Pat Conroy

"Hitler didn't travel. Stalin didn't travel. Saddam Hussein never traveled. They didn't want to have their orthodoxy challenged."
Howard Gardner

"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home."
James Michener

"To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries."
Aldous Huxley

"The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience.  The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him.  He goes "sight-seeing."
Daniel J. Boorstin
